“Rachel is one measly human woman,” Casiphia cried through gnashed teeth. “How does she keep escaping?” Casiphia flipped a long strand of dark hair off her shoulder as she paced anxiously in the hotel room she’d rented on the south rim of the Grand Canyon three nights ago.
“Patience,” said Pan, who was still in Kevin’s body and lounging on a chair that was made out of an Indian feather headdress. He was most certainly not dead or devoured by Tiamat. The entire room and hotel was Indian and cowboy–themed, including the actual saddles glued to the top of the stools in the hotel bar. “We don’t really even need her as collateral. Sam bought the story. He’s coming here to open the tomb, and he’s bringing Rachel with him. We can snag her here.”
“I’d rather have her in hand,” Casiphia said, her red lips drawing themselves into a pout. “Sam has a thing for her, it’s obvious. And we need Sam to play along, and if he decides not to, then we can use her for insurance. Having her as a bargaining chip would make me feel a lot better. I don’t want anything to screw this up.” Casiphia abruptly stopped pacing. “I shouldn’t have left it to a water demon.”
“Hey—the good Lady T did her job,” Kevin said, holding up what looked like an oversized jelly jar, the kind that would normally hold jam or sweet tea. It was full of a murky-looking liquid that seemed to roll and move in many directions at once. “It wasn’t her fault Rachel wasn’t at home.”
“A demon with half a brain would’ve known that before she leveled the place,” Casiphia said with disdain.
The water in the jar started to boil a little, prickled by the insult.
“Now, now, she didn’t mean anything by it, girl,” Kevin said, soothing the jar with a little pat. “So tell me again why we need Sam?”
“I never told you in the first place,” Casiphia snapped. “But I need Sam to open Azazel’s tomb. He’s one of the only beings who can. The lock can only be opened by a fallen angel who hasn’t yet pledged allegiance to the devil.”
“And there certainly aren’t many of those around. I only know of Sam.”
“Exactly.”
“So why so hot for Azazel?”
Casiphia shrugged, as if she couldn’t care less, and turned to freshen her makeup in the nearby mirror, but Kevin could see through it.
“Oh, I see. You actually love him.”
“He had a grandiose plan to take on Satan and God. I admire his ambition.”
“Hmmm. So you’re tricking Sam to come here and release Azazel for you. Man, that’s cold. I have to admit, I think you’re more evil than I am.”
“As if that would be hard,” Casiphia sniffed, unimpressed. “You actually lived with a woman for years, happily married, and didn’t even manage to do anything bad while you were—unless you count boinking that girl, what’s her name?”
“Vanessa.”
“Right, and she was what? Eighteen? The legal age of consent. Oooh. The scandal!”
“So sue me,” Kevin said.
